Metzenbaum surgical scissors are designed for cutting delicate tissue and blunt dissection. These scissors have extra-long handles and short blades for deep cuts into the body. Metzenbaum scissors (also known as dissecting scissors) have blunt cutting blades, that make these scissors ideal for dissecting a variety of tissues.

Metzenbaum scissors come in variable lengths and have a relatively long shank-to-blade ratio. These scissors can be further classified according to cutting edge. Regular Cut Metzenbaum Scissors have both smooth cutting edges and both rings have satin steel finish. Super Cut Metzenbaum Scissors have one serrated cutting edge and one thumb ring is Gold color coated for identification. Tungsten Carbide Metzenbaum Scissors have both cutting edges inserted with tungsten carbide tips. One edge is smooth and one cutting edge is fine serrated. Both thumb rings are Gold color coated.

Application

Metzenbaum scissors or dissecting scissors are primarily used in surgery to cut tissue and suture material. The long handles of Metzenbaum scissors permits to work in deep tissues, so the surgeon's manipulation is not hindered by wide-opening scissor blades. Metzenbaum scissors can also be used to cut dressing material or bandages, just like other surgical scissors. In preparative anatomy, they can also be used to open tissue.
