Overview of GDT Plain Catgut Sutures
GDT Plain Catgut Sutures are sterile, absorbable surgical sutures composed of purified connective tissue (collagen) derived from the submucosal layer of sheep (bovine) and goat intestine. These sutures are ivory in color and are devoid of chromium salts and pyrogallol, ensuring a high level of safety and compatibility with patient tissues. The sutures are permanently attached to 3/8 Circle 20.0mm Reverse Cutting hardened stainless steel needles, providing durability and precision during surgical procedures.
Product Specifications
Our Plain Catgut Sutures are non-coated and absorbable, made from purified connective tissue, primarily collagen, derived from the serosal layer of bovine intestines. Available in USP sizes 3-0, 4-0, and 5-0, each suture has a length of 75.0 cm. These sutures are known for their smooth and uniform surface, good pliability, excellent knot security, high tensile strength exceeding USP requirements, and ease of handling with no drag during tissue passage.
Indications and Selection
GDT Plain Catgut Sutures are indicated for use in general soft tissue approximation and/or ligation, including ophthalmic procedures, but are not suitable for cardiovascular and neurological tissues. The choice of suture should be based on the patient's condition, surgical experience, technique, and wound size.
Mode of Action and Performance
GDT Plain Catgut Sutures elicit minimal tissue reaction and promote the ingrowth of fibrous connective tissue. The absorption of these bio-absorbable sutures occurs through enzymatic action, beginning with the loss of tensile strength followed by the loss of mass. GDT Plain Catgut Sutures retain their tensile strength for 7 to 14 days and are fully absorbed within 50 to 60 days. When implanted, a moderate tissue inflammation occurs, characteristic of a foreign body response. The proteolytic enzymatic digestive process resorbs the surgical catgut, leading to the gradual loss of suture mass and strength.
Tissue Sites
Catgut sutures are absorbed more rapidly in tissues with higher levels of proteolytic enzymes, such as those found in secretions from the stomach, cervix, and vagina. They are also absorbed more quickly in infected tissues compared to non-infected tissues.
