Overview of GDT PGA Sutures

GDT PGA Sutures are synthetic, coated, braided absorbable sterile surgical sutures composed entirely of a homopolymer of glycolide (100%). These sutures are violet-dyed and coated with a unique combination of polycaprolactone and calcium stearate. Available in USP sizes 3-0, 4-0, and 5-0, each suture has a length of 75.0 cm and is attached to a 3/8 Circle 20.0mm Reverse Cutting hardened stainless steel needle.

Our Polyglycolic Acid (PGA) Sutures are designed to be absorbable, providing excellent tensile strength and knot security. Composed of polyglycolic acid coated with polycaprolactone and calcium stearate, these sutures elicit a significantly reduced inflammatory response due to their synthetic nature and are absorbed by hydrolysis. After two weeks of implantation, 85% of the initial tensile strength remains, providing reliable wound support for up to 30 days. Complete absorption occurs within 60-90 days, ensuring minimal tissue reaction and excellent histocompatibility.

Indications and Selection

GDT PGA Sutures are indicated for use in general soft tissue surgeries, including ophthalmic procedures, but are not suitable for cardiovascular and neurological tissues. The choice of suture should be based on the patient's condition, surgical experience, technique, and wound size. The minimal tissue reactivity and synthetic composition make these sutures compatible with all patients, minimizing the risk of negative body reactions.

Performance and Benefits

GDT PGA Sutures lead to the ingrowth of fibrous connective tissue due to their minimal initial inflammatory reaction. The sutures are absorbed by hydrolysis, with the polymer degrading into glycolic acid, which is subsequently absorbed and metabolized by the body. The absorption process begins with a loss of tensile strength followed by a loss of mass. GDT PGA Sutures retain 70% of their tensile strength by the end of the second week and are progressively absorbed between 60 and 90 days. The performance of these sutures in terms of tensile strength is as follows:

  • Approximately 96.1% at 7 days
  • Approximately 83.3% at 14 days
  • Approximately 53.8% at 21 days
  • Approximately 19.95% at 28 days

These sutures exhibit excellent elasticity, very low tissue reaction, and simple passage through tissues due to their low frictional coefficient. They provide superior wound support with minimal complications, ensuring effective and reliable surgical outcomes.
