The ozone

Ozone is a natural molecule, present in the earth's atmosphere, and requires very particular environmental conditions (cold) to remain so.

It's a gas formed by three oxygen atoms, it's highly energy-rich and, thanks to its instability, it's a very strong and rapid oxidizing agent.

It's colourless, although it tends to turn towards blue, characterized by a distinctive smell, it liquefies at -11.9 ∞C forming a strongly blue colored liquid, it freezes at -192.6 ∞C giving a violet colored solid.

Biological effects of ozone

The biological effects of ozone are many and can be classified as:

  • Decontaminating action: ozone acts on bacteria, viruses, fungi, altering their membrane structures and inducing cellular modifications that lead to the denaturation of microorganisms.

  • Anti-hypoxic action: ozone improves the transport of oxygen in the blood, consequently the processes of cellular metabolism, based on the supply of oxygen, are strongly enhanced.

  • Immunomodulatory action: ozone influences the action of the cells of the immune system, stimulates their proliferation, improves the activity of macrophages favoring the mechanism of phagocytosis.

The decontaminating power of ozone is based on the strong electrochemical instability of the molecule which, in contact with surfaces colonized by microorganisms, determines its elimination.
