SmartBone® ORTHO – Unique technology, different indications

In the last years, following changes in references normative scenario, IBI consolidated two different certifications for SmartBone® according to the class of clinical indications of use: SmartBone® ORTHO for orthopaedic and SmartBone® for dental.

SmartBone® ORTHO is osteoconductive, biocompatible, biodegradable and its microstructure has a porosity that promotes a fast and effective bone regeneration, thus successfully allowing its use in orthopaedic and spine surgery.

SmartBone® ORTHO is CE marked according to 93/42/EEC Medical Device Directive classified as a class III Medical Device.

Advantages of SmartBone® ORTHO

• Easy dust free shaping with any type of surgical tool (for example: bone cutter, drill)
• Resistant to heavy loads and to heavy surgical maneuvering
• Far better stability of the augmented bone graft vs the loose granules
• Bigger defects do not need autologous bone, thus reducing patient morbidity
• No resorption: the polymeric coating protects the graft during initial healing/osteointegration period
• Readily absorbs blood

Orthopaedic indications

In ortophaedics surgery SmartBone® ORTHO is used:

• During arthroplasty and revision arthroplasty to fill or reconstruct the acetabular bone or for replenishment of the femur in impaction allografting
• After wedge osteotomy
• After curettage of benign bone tumors and tumor-like lesions for structural scaffolding of curetted lesions or filling
• For reconstruction after geometric osteotomies for benign aggressive tumor resections
• For en bloc customized bone reconstructions in malignant tumor resection
